Let’s give David Moyes some credit
Since John Lyall, Moyes is the manager that has achieved more for us.

You might not like it, but he has given us plenty of good games. He definitely deserves to stay.

This premier league season was bad. Too many dire games. It has been tough, it was Moyes's fault, but he came through in the end.

I see some calling for possession football a change of style, new ideas a different way to play. But we tried possession with Pellegrini and I do not remember many supporting Pellegrini before he went.

After Pellegrini, Moyes sorted us out with defense and counter. We played many games very well, very entertaining. Apparently he had aspirations to try possession football this season, but didn't even get going. We will never compete with possession football, not without crazy money and way way better ownership. I don't see it happening, at least not in the near future.

The way to go is counter attacking with Moyes, but we need to focus on getting more shots, more counter attacking and forget about possession. Moyes can get us back to more attacking and less defending.

Obviously it will not be easy, massive changes ahead. Is Moyes the man for the job? Of course he is. I am on for the ride.

I'm pretty sure I've seen him interviewed where he's said he's going to try again.

He's certainly earned a crack at next season. If he's flailing by the time the nights draw in then time for a change.

Re: Let’s give David Moyes some credit
Of course he deserves some credit. His record, statistically, is excellent.
Saved us from relegation, but not kept on.
Came back and saved us from relegation.
Qualified for Europe.
Semi finals in Europe and qualified for Europe again.
Poor PL season, but survived. Won a European competition and qualified for Europe, for the third season running.
Maybe Vexed could tell me, which WH manager has a better record?
I’d just love to have a good run in Europe again. Roll on next season. ⚒⚒

Moyes never saved us from relegation.

Both times when he came, we were outside the relegation places. He helped us survive.

Re: Let’s give David Moyes some credit
Thanks for a wonderful week in Prague but he lost 20 out of 38 league games, he doesn't deserve to get another season based on that, no manager would.. But especially one who had spent all that money.

Oh and nobody knows if he saved us from relegation... Why do I keep reading this shit.. He didn't improve our form in the second half of the season in his second stint despite adding Bowen and Soucek.

Re: Let’s give David Moyes some credit
Greenwood FA Cup and ECWC plus a semi final or two. Lyall two FA Cups, League Cup Final, ECWC Final, third in the League which would give us CL football today and the odd semi final, and a brand of football that would probably be perfect on the pitches we have today. Yes both had their bad seasons but where I would certainly place them above Moyes is on the whole they both made players better players.

Iron Duke. Not into facts, are you? When he took over in Nov 2017, we WERE in the relegation zone. 18th position.
When he took over in 2019, we were 1 point clear orf relegation.

Re: Let’s give David Moyes some credit
Zico. Lyall also got us relegated twice.

Also look at league positions.
Lyall.
13, 18, 17, 20 (relegated)
Div. 2. - 5, 7, 1 (promoted)
9, 8, 9, 16, 3, 15, 16, 19 (relegated)

Hands up all those who would accept giving our place in Europe to spurs if that was the price for getting rid of Moyes?

No choice in a replacement - just losing the sweaty.

Re: Let’s give David Moyes some credit
Zico, you refer to Lyall's record with " the odd semi-final".

When were they? I maybe wrong but I don't remembet losing a semi-final under Lyall. Played 4 won 4

Relegated us twice, let Ray Houghton go on a free and replaced Phil Parkes with Allen McKnight.

I know Lyall has been deified since his death but really he was good, but not that good.

Didn't we lose 2 semi's in the League cup vs Luton in Lyall's final season?

Nagel, yes you're right I stand corrected.

Luton and Brighton next season. A double bogey.

norwaytips not sure Lyall and Greenwood had the luxury of a quarter of a billion to build their sides in their first three years

Re: Let’s give David Moyes some credit
We poorly lost a two legged League Cup Semi-Final against Luton in 1989, the year of Lyall's sacking.

For sure Lyall made mistakes in the transfer market but he was at the club as manager from 1974–1989, you are going to have some barren years and disasters when you are at a club that long. For every Allen McKnight or David Kelly you have a Devonshire, McAvennie, Dicks, Parkes himself, Gale, Martin, David Cross, Goddard, etc. Any keeper or striker would have probably struggled following Parkes and Cottee.

As for Ray Houghton in hindsight sure you could call that a mistake, the same as Greenwood sticking with his original agreement to sign Bobby Ferguson despite Gordon Banks being available, but it was a different time and Lyall admitted several times that the club at the time had a lot of midfield players and Alan Dickens was coming through, and he felt it fair to Houghton that he needed to play. These days you would have Houghton in a squad of 25 or whatever. Again, hindsight shows Houghton had a far better career than Dickens but every manager makes a decision at the time. Redknapp had a chance to sign Marcelo Salas and didn't.

The 78 relegation the club needed a clear out and he rebuilt brilliantly. That 81 side is arguably the best I have seen and it was only injuries to Alvin and Steve Whitton that stopped us mounting a challenge in 83ish. 85/86 was of course legendary and yes the club should have built on that but was that down to Lyall or the funds available? He never had 150 odd million to spend. Did he put his feet under the table a bit after the club prevented him from moving to QPR? Maybe, but we still had our best League season a couple of years later.

Yes it went sour later on, but in my opinion I think he would have had a clear out and started again in 89, or at least what should have happened is for him to move upstairs and groom either Bonzo or Alvin for the job later on. It seems incredible that he was only 49 ish when he got the sack.

Just my opinion but the football was better on the whole and many a player improved under both Lyall and Greenwood. I can't see many who have improved under Moyes. Yes I am grateful for Moyes for bringing in a trophy and you could argue he deserves another year but until he wins two FA Cups or an FA Cup to add to the European Trophy you can't say he is the Clubs best ever manager. In fact I would put Harry and Bonzo ahead of him purely on the football played. Just my opinion.

Re: Let’s give David Moyes some credit
Its hard to compare the reign of Moyes to Lyall & Greenwood in terms of success. It’s completely different era’s and football was a lot different back then with managers being given more time.

The only thing you you can say is that Greenwood & Lyall played a more exciting brand of football than Moyes and had more focus on the young players from our academy.

As far as success, Greenwood managed us for 13 years and Lyall for 15 years. Moyes has only been in the job for 3.5 so you would have to give Moyes another 10 years if you wanted to judge him in comparison to the other 2 in terms of success.

You could question how tough winning the conference league was but you could also say the same for winning the cup winners cup where there were far less games to play, we beat the “might” of Gent, Sparta Prague & Lausanne Sport to get to the semi finals and then had the final on “Home turf” in London. Both were great achievements for our club but similar in that we avoided the big European teams for much of it.

Also as far as the comparison on how much money was spent, yes we did spend a lot this past year but don’t forget that in 1979 as a second division club we bought Phil Parkes for 550k ( A world record for a goalkeeper), Ray Stewart for 400k & Stuart Pearson for 200k. That was a big outlay in 1979 for a 2nd division club.
